0:49Now PlayingPresident Joe Biden warned Wednesday that Hurricane Idalia is “still very dangerous” although it had lost strength after coming ashore in Florida, and underscored that he has not forgotten about the wildfire victims in Hawaii, declaring himself “laser focused” on helping them recover.
Speaking from the White House Roosevelt Room, Biden urged residents from Florida to the Carolinas to "remain vigilant," as he pledged the federal government would be there to help the states recover.
Idalia, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane was moving north Wednesday as a Category 1 storm with winds of 85 mph (140 kph). Coastal storm surge as high as 16 feet in places remained a major concern.
Biden said he had spoken to the governors of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, and had directed Deanne Criswell, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to head to Florida and spend Thursday traveling around the state with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
