This comes after Rep. Matt Gaetz, a longtime critic, moved to launch a vote to oust him from the helm.
Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida, rose in the chamber Monday as the House was almost done for the day to file the motion.
The resolution would set a snap vote in coming days that even Gaetz acknowledges may not have enough support to remove the speaker from the job.
Only a handful of hard-right Republicans have signaled they are willing to vote to remove McCarthy.
