0:57Now PlayingVice President Kamala Harris decried yesterday's deadly gun violence in Lewiston, Maine telling a gathering at the State Department that "gun violence has terrorized and traumatized so many of our communities in this country."
"It does not have to be this way," she said.
Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the State Department as the Australian leader continues his visit to the U.S.
Harris said the Biden administration will continue to provide "full support" to state and local authorities in Maine following the shooting, which officials say has left at least 18 people dead.
The shooting has sparked a massive search for the suspect, 40-year-old Robert Card, of Bowdoin, Maine, and authorities have urged residents to lock themselves in their homes because Card remains at large. Schools in the area have also been closed Thursday.
"As we gather details, we must continue to speak truth about the moment we are in in our country today," Harris said. "The leading cause of death of American children is gun violence."
With Australia's prime minister standing next to her on stage, Harris pointed to his country, which passed major gun reform laws in 1996 following a massacre that left dozens dead.
The reforms are widely seen as causing a highly significant drop in gun homicides, suicides and deaths.
