President Joe Biden's speech at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston was interrupted momentarily Monday by pro-Palestinian protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. As Biden was delivering his remarks at the site of the 2015 mass shooting where a gunman took the lives of nine Black churchgoers, one of the protesters yelled, "If you really care about the lives lost here, then you should honor the lives lost and call for a cease-fire in Palestine."

As the protesters were led out of the church by authorities, speech attendees then began to chant "four more years. Biden responded saying, "I understand their passion," and added that he's been "quietly working with the Israeli government" to urge them to bring the operation to a close. A female in the audience then shouted, "You're a good man."

Biden was using the campaign speech to highlight white supremacy as a “poison” which he declared has no place in America. Biden wants Americans to know what he believes is at stake in the November presidential election and is revisiting some of the nation’s worst traumas to highlight what happens when hate is allowed to fester.

It was June 17, 2015, when a 21-year-old white man walked into the church and, intending to ignite a race war, shot and killed nine Black parishioners and wounded one more. Biden was vice president when he attended the memorial service in Charleston, where President Barack Obama famously sang "Amazing Grace."
