Top figures from business, sports and politics turned up for Wednesday's state dinner honoring Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida as the White House served up its maximum dose of pomp to honor a close U.S. ally.

Toasting the close relationship between the United States and Japan, President Joe Biden praised the two countries common bonds.

"We may be divided by distance, but generation after generation, we've been brought together the same hopes, the same values, the same commitment to democracy and freedom and a dignity for all," Biden said.

"And today, without question, our alliance is literally stronger than it has ever been," Biden said as he raised a glass to toast Kishida.

The Japanese Prime Minister joked of his overfondness for a phrase used by President John F. Kennedy during a White House luncheon with Japanese Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda 60 years ago. "The Pacific Ocean does not separate Japan and the United States," Kennedy said at the time, "rather, it unites us." Kishida said his staff try and delete those lines from his speeches.
