Justice Juan Merchan swore in the first seven jurors, leaving 11 more spots to be filled, including six alternates. At that pace, jury selection could end sooner than the two weeks the judge planned for. Merchan told the first six jurors to be prepared to report to court as soon as Monday for opening statements. Jury selection will resume Thursday, with no trial proceedings Wednesday.
Merchan lashed out at Trump after the former president muttered and gesticulated when a potential juror was being questioned about her social media posts that were allegedly critical of Trump. “I will not have any jurors intimidated in this courtroom!” the judge shouted. “Take a moment to speak to your client,” Merchan told Trump’s lawyers. The episode raises questions about how Trump will conduct himself during the biggest trial of his life.
Trump’s lawyers dug deep into social media posts of prospective jurors, finding Facebook posts from many years ago to contradict people who claimed they could be fair to Trump. With the judge’s approval, several individuals were called to the witness stand to answer questions about their posts, and some were dismissed by the judge.
