0:54Now PlayingSecretary of State Antony Blinken said Hamas demanded several changes to a cease-fire proposal that go beyond the group’s previous stance, casting fresh doubt about the chances for a deal anytime soon.
Hamas’s position means the war that began with the group’s attack on Oct. 7 “will go on,” Blinken told a briefing in Doha. “We will continue to push on an urgent basis to try and close this deal.”
The top US diplomat’s comments signaled a downbeat assessment about the prospects of a deal after days of negotiations being mediated by Qatar and Egypt. He spoke after Hamas, which is designated a terrorist group by the US and the European Union, delivered its response to a cease-fire proposal for the war in Gaza, which President Joe Biden outlined on May 31.
