0:36Now PlayingThe US has pledged an “unprecedented” level of defense funding to the Philippines amounting to $500 million, reinforcing an increasingly important alliance ahead of the US presidential election in November.
“We’re poised to deliver a once-in-a-generation investment to help modernize the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at a joint briefing in Manila on Tuesday with State Secretary Antony Blinken and their Philippine counterparts Gilberto Teodoro and Enrique Manalo.
Washington also intends to double its investment in Philippine military sites that the US has access to, according to Austin who expressed optimism that no matter who takes over from President Joe Biden, the trajectory of US-Philippine relations that has risen to a high point will be sustained.
