1:00Now PlayingThe head of Bangladesh’s army said he would help to form an interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced from office following a wave of protests over the weekend that left more than 100 people dead.
With anti-government protesters converging on the capital Dhaka in defiance of a curfew, Bangladeshi media reported that Hasina had fled the country. TV images showed people ransacking her official residence.
The South Asian country has been on edge since late June, when student leaders took to the streets demanding an end to a system of government job quotas. While the Supreme Court has rolled back most of the quotas, it failed to quell the unrest, as protesters turned their focus to the more general problem of youth unemployment.
