The AI spending, unveiled during a two-day artificial intelligence summit taking place in Paris, includes a mix of new and previously announced investments from Amazon.com Inc., Brookfield Asset Management and Apollo Global Management Inc. Much of it comes from the United Arab Emirates, which is committing €50 billion, according to officials in Macron’s office.
In the two-plus years since ChatGPT’s launch kicked off a global AI race, tech firms have invested billions in computer chips, data centers and energy projects in the US, Europe and other markets to support building more advanced artificial intelligence systems. But Macron and others have also expressed concerns that Europe is slipping behind the US and China on AI development.
