The comments, ahead of Zelenskiy’s meeting at the Munich Security Conference with US Vice President JD Vance, came as US, European and Ukrainian negotiators positioned themselves for talks between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending the three-year conflict.
“We are ready for talks with the US, allies — and then after we have agreed on a position, we will talk to Russians,” Zelenskiy told reporters on Friday in the Bavarian capital.
Leaders gathering in Munich are searching for details on how the Trump administration will shepherd negotiations with Putin. Trump has sought to bring the war to a quick end, though in doing so risks forcing concessions on Ukraine and threatens to freeze out Europeans.
Asked about the Vance meeting as the US administration shakes up American engagement, Zelenskiy’s said that he “respects our partnership” — but warned that the US presence in Europe was needed to counter Russia’s threat.
