The Trump Justice Department’s controversial bid to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced scrutiny in court on Wednesday, an early test of the administration’s efforts to assert more control over US prosecutions.

US District Judge Dale Ho heard arguments from Adams’ lawyer and a Justice Department official to determine whether to sign off on the dismissal. Ho ended the hearing without a ruling, saying he would carefully consider the arguments.

Appearing for the government, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove told Ho that he should not conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the Justice Department’s decision to drop the case.

Adams, who was also in court, told the judge he understood that the motion was only seeking dismissal without prejudice, meaning the charges could be re-filed later. Critics have said that will give the Trump administration leverage over the mayor.

“I have not committed a crime,” the mayor said. “I do not see them bringing it back, I’m not afraid of that.”

Wednesday’s proceeding caps a week of drama that thrust New York City into political turmoil and prompted resignations by career prosecutors who were unwilling to carry out the administration’s demands. Justice Department lawyers on Friday formally requested that the case be dismissed, after several days of back-and-forth between department leaders in Washington and career officials.
