0:29Now PlayingPresident Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrives at the White House on Friday with a personal appeal to persuade Donald Trump not to sell out his country in the rush to make a peace deal with Russia.
The Ukrainian leader is coming to seal an agreement — pushed by Trump — that would allow the US to share in future revenues from the country’s natural resources, hoping it would start a discussion on security guarantees, which Kyiv sees as critical to ensure any peace deal holds.
Zelenskiy is also betting that by meeting the American president in person, he will be able to keep the US onside after the administration alarmed its European allies with its recent tilt toward Moscow.
The worst fears seemed to fade a bit on the eve of the trip, as Trump blithely walked back his denunciation of his Ukrainian counterpart as a “dictator” just last week.
