0:20Now PlayingAn American Airlines Group Inc. aircraft’s engine caught fire at Denver International Airport, prompting an evacuation that included some passengers clambering onto a wing as smoke engulfed the jet.
The Boeing Co. 737-800 plane had diverted to Denver after reporting engine vibrations and landed safely at 5:15 p.m. local time on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which is joining the FAA in investigating the incident, is dispatching two people with expertise in commercial aircraft and engines, who are set to arrive on the scene Friday. The agency will issue a preliminary report within 30 days.
While taxiing to the gate, an engine caught fire and passengers were evacuated using the aircraft’s slides, the FAA said. Video footage shared on social media showed about two dozen passengers walking onto one of the wings via an emergency door and then being guided onto the tarmac with ladders provided by support staff on the ground.
