as posted by the channelPresident Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on auto imports put a dent in shares of carmakers across the world and set off a scramble among trade negotiators to calibrate a response that they hope won’t intensify global trade wars.
“We’re going to charge countries for doing business in our country and taking our jobs, taking our wealth, taking a lot of things that they’ve been taking over the years,” Trump said at the White House late Wednesday, offering the first leg of his highly anticipated rollout of so-called reciprocal tariffs on April 2.
Trump also tempered expectations for next week’s tariffs. “We’re going to make it all countries, and we’re going to make it very lenient,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “People are going to be very surprised. It’ll be, in many cases, less than the tariff that they’ve been charging us for decades.”
Meanwhile, the European Union is preparing for a massive round of tariffs set to target the bloc and among its retaliatory options are some of the EU’s most powerful trade-policy tools.
