0:24Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump’s special envoy described his talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last week as “compelling,” saying they discussed steps that could end the war in Ukraine and perhaps lead to business opportunities.
At the end of a nearly five-hour meeting, the envoy, Steve Witkoff, told Fox News in an interview on Monday, Putin made his request to secure “a permanent peace,” a development Witkoff said “took a while for us to get to.”
The key to an overall agreement revolves around “five territories,” Witkoff said, without providing more details. Russia insists that its military seizure of parts of Ukraine since 2014, including Crimea and large areas of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, must be recognized in any accord.
The renewed diplomatic push came after Trump expressed frustration at the pace of negotiations with Russia, which has so far declined to accept his proposal for a truce in Ukraine as a starting-point for broader peace talks. The president wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform last Friday that “Russia has to get moving” to help bring about a ceasefire.
