Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday met with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, who visited Russia to take part in World Atomic Week.

During the meeting, Lukashenko proposed building a new nuclear power plant in eastern Belarus that could supply electricity to regions of Ukraine held by Russia, including Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk.

Putin gave some support to the idea, saying that Russia could finance it if there were "consumers who would take electricity and pay at a required rate."
