The Nov. 4 election offers voters stark choices — between youthful energy and experience, and between the far left and centrism. The Democratic nominee, 34-year-old State Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani, is a self-described democratic socialist who would be the city’s youngest mayor in a century and the first South Asian and Muslim mayor in the city’s 400-year history.
Mamdani’s closest rival in the race is former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Like his father, Mario, Cuomo was elected to lead the Empire State three times. He resigned in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, which he denies. After his loss to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, which shocked the city’s establishment, Cuomo is running as an independent.
