Machado had recorded a voice message expressing gratitude "for this immense recognition of our people’s struggle for democracy and freedom" before arriving in Oslo to accept her Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee awarded Machado the Peace Prize for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights" and "her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
