0:28Now PlayingSecretary of State Marco Rubio defended the Trump adminstration's operation earlier this month to seize Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and install his vice president, Delcy Rodríguez as the interim president.
Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Wednesday, Rubio called Maduro "an impediment to progress," who repeatedly turned down U.S. attempts to get him to leave the country on his own.
"None of the things we're talking about now, not the release of political prisoners, not the transition of the oil industry to a legitimate oil industry, not that the erosion of Iranian, Russian, or Chinese influence, none of these things would have been possible as long as Maduro was there,' Rubio added.
