President Donald Trump said the US will ensure safe passage of oil from the Middle East to head off a potential energy crisis.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has showed no signs of abating, with both countries continuing to exchange airstrikes and missile fire, and more than 1,000 people have died in Iran.
Trump announced that the US International Development Finance Corporation would offer insurance to help ensure the flow of energy and other commercial trade in the Gulf, and the US Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary.
