Noboa said a US troop deployment could happen as early as this year, and that with US help, his government had succeeded in slashing the homicide rate in the violent region near the Colombian border.
The idea of an increased US presence has already met political resistance, including a November 2025 referendum in which voters rejected a package of constitutional changes put forward by Noboa.
