Democrat Eric Swalwell said he will resign from his congressional seat, days after a series of sexual assault allegations prompted him to abandon a once-promising campaign for governor of California. #politics #usa #worldnews #california
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said in a post on X on Monday announcing his resignation. He vowed to “fight the serious, false allegations made against me,” but also said “must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
His departure likely ends the political career of the 45-year-old San Francisco Bay area congressman, who just a week ago had been polling among the top Democrats to succeed Gavin Newsom.
