University of Calgary economics professor Trevor Tombe estimated that 90,000 jobs may be lost if the new tariffs persist, and the Canadian dollar fell as much as 0.6% to 1.3840 per US dollar.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada will respond with counter-tariffs on $20 billion of US products from Sept. 8, and his government has pledged financial help for businesses caught in the crossfire.
