The policy bans the use of AI among preschool through grade 8 students and prohibits companion chatbots for all grades, with some exceptions for high school students and students with disabilities.
New York City's policy limits screen time on one-to-one devices for students, recommending capping screen time at 30 minutes per day for grade 3 through 5 students, and 45 minutes maximum for grades 6 through 8.
