2:17Now PlayingPrime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK economy is starting to turn around as he sought to reset his Labour government’s relationship with business after a torrid first six months in power.
“We have to get our economy working. I think we’re beginning to see how that’s turning around,” Starmer said in an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday. “The number one priority of this Labour government is growth: growth, growth, growth.” The UK would “strip away regulation, strip away the inhibition of planning and use AI to take us forward,” he said.
The premier also indicated he wanted a better trading relationship with the US amid the prospect of global tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump, saying: “We’ve got a huge amount of trade between our two countries already and the base is there for even better trading relations. We need to build on that.”
Starmer spoke with Bloomberg's Francine Lacqua.
