Sara Lind, co-Executive Director of Open Plans, breaks down where congestion pricing stands in the face of a block by the Trump administration and what the toll has meant for New Yorkers since it was enacted.

Just as Manhattan was beginning to see gridlock ease from New York's congestion pricing scheme, the Trump administration said Wednesday it was moving to withdraw federal approval for the program. The move swiftly prompted a lawsuit from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, accusing the US Department of Transportation of overstepping its authority.

And while President Donald Trump has already declared the toll “dead” on social media — in the same message proclaiming “long live the king” — MTA says the charge will remain in effect until there is a court decision.

Trump’s assertion has also prompted a rebuke from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who accused the president of infringing on the state’s rights while also acting like a monarch. “We are not subservient to a king or anyone else out of Washington,” she said at a press briefing.
