House Republicans are looking to lead on legislation permanently extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and increasing spending toward defense and the border, aiming to keep recent momentum going as soon as lawmakers return to Washington.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters last week that House Republicans will immediately begin holding markups on reconciliation instructions when Congress reconvenes at the end of the month.
After agreeing on a budget framework last week, Republican lawmakers will have just a little more than one month to meet a self-imposed deadline to send a massive domestic policy bill to President Donald Trump’s desk by Memorial Day.

House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), the lawmaker tasked with assembling the final reconciliation bill when the authorizing committees finish their pieces of it, said on a press call last week Republicans “haven’t been just sitting on our hands.”
“My fellow chairman of authorizing committees and my colleagues who are members of those committees have been working for weeks, if not months to satisfy the budget targets in the resolution,” Arrington said. “We’ve had very informal policy debate and development.”
