President Donald Trump hits the road today after spending much of his second term’s first 100 days ensconced in the White House or at his private clubs. And after a trip to Michigan that includes a rally with supporters tonight, he’s set to give two commencement addresses and travel to the Middle East in May.
The president’s general reluctance to leave his comfort zones raised questions about whether he missed chances to reassure a public that may be souring on him. Just 39% of Americans approved of the way Trump is doing his job, down from 45% in February, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Fewer than 4 in 10 Americans approve of how he’s steering the economy, a CNN poll showed.
But even in the White House, Trump has an ability other presidents lacked to “dominate cable television,” said Mike Dubke, communications director during Trump’s first term. Still, Dubke noted, Trump “connects so well with the average American and he misses that when he doesn’t get out of the confines of Mar-a-Lago.
