US prosecutors “expressed their intent on dropping all criminal charges” against the planemaker during a meeting on Friday with the relatives’ attorneys, the Clifford Law Offices, which represents some of the family members, said in a statement. Boeing is scheduled to face a June 23 trial in the case. Bloomberg Intelligence's George Ferguson reports.
final decision hasn’t been made, according to the statement, and Boeing would contribute $444.5 million fine to a crash victims’ fund under the framework being considered by the DOJ.
The DOJ declined to comment. Boeing didn’t immediately comment.
If finalized and approved by a judge, the deal would resolve a long-running legal saga stemming from the 2018 and 2019 crashes that killed 346 people.
Boeing last year agreed to plead guilty to a single criminal conspiracy charge, before that deal was rejected by a federal judge in December. Boeing and US prosecutors then began renegotiating that plea agreement. The planemaker in March sought to withdraw its guilty plea, the Wall Street Journal reported at the time.
“Dismissing the case would dishonor the memories of 346 victims,” Paul Cassell, an attorney for the relatives, said in the statement. Cassell said they hope the judge will use his authority to reject the proposal that is “clearly contrary to the public interest.”
