The Trump administration has revived Biden-era efforts to create a domestic supply chain for rare-earth magnets after China clamped down on exports of the metals earlier this year, people familiar with the matter said.
President Donald Trump’s attempt to secure a domestic supply chain, which hasn’t been previously reported, underscored how much China’s April trade action raised serious concerns within the White House and the Pentagon that they might run out of the magnets needed in everything from missile guidance systems to wind turbines.
Concerns regarding access to the magnets have eased for now after Trump spoke with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday. Trump said the two sides were “straightening out some of the points, having to do mostly with rare earth magnets and some other things.”
