5:53Now PlayingConstellation Energy Corp. announced in September that it plans to restart a mothballed nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island in the eastern US, with executives saying the site would be ready to deliver power in 2028. Now, that timeline just got shorter. Stephanie Diaz, BNEF Senior Associate, joins Bloomberg Intelligence to report on data centers, and US nuclear startups.
The notorious plant in Middletown, Pennsylvania, has been shuttered since 2019, and it’s going to take a lot of work to get systems up and running. But that’s not the longest part of the process.
Chief Executive Officer Joe Dominguez said at the time that all the physical work would probably take until 2027, but it would be another year before PJM Interconnection LLC would be able to link the plant to its electricity grid.
Tech companies are banking on fresh sources of power, especially nuclear, to help keep data centers humming. So it was a pretty big deal when executives from Constellation and PJM stood outside the reactor last week to announce that the grid operator had fast-tracked the hookup process.
A little pressure from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also helped.
The reactor is now expected to start delivering power in mid-2027, a year ahead of schedule.
“When PJM gets this connected, we’ll be ready,” Dominguez said.
PJM operates the biggest US grid, stretching from Chicago to the New Jersey shore, and adding a new plant is complicated and time-consuming. Getting through the connection queue typically takes years, and it’s one of the major hurdles for companies planning to deliver more electricity as power demand swells.
The speedy review comes at a key moment. Dominguez delivered his remarks during a heat wave that was driving consumption on the PJM grid to record levels as air conditioners were cranked up.
In between speakers, former Miss America Grace Stanke, now a Constellation employee, encouraged everyone at the outdoor event to drink water: “Hydrate, people!”
The accelerated schedule is also good news for Microsoft Corp., which needs electricity to run its artificial-intelligence operations and has a long-term deal to buy power from Constellation once the reactor goes into service.
“This plant is moving faster than we ever dreamed would be possible,” said Bobby Hollis, Microsoft’s vice president for energy.
