Senators have advanced their first three government-funding bills in a committee vote, a glimpse of bipartisan progress as the Sept. 30 shutdown deadline approaches.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the Agriculture-FDA, Commerce-Justice-Science, and Legislative Branch bills Thursday.
Members voted 21-6 to advance the Commerce-Justice-Science bill. They voted 27-0 to advance the Agriculture-FDA bill. And they voted 26-1 to advance the Legislative Branch bill.
The panel has not published the bills publicly and the committee markup is continuing. After voting on the bills, members consider amendments, and then the panel is expected to release the draft text later in the day.
Appropriators have outlined some priorities, including some instances in which Senate Republicans are rejecting some of the House’s more conservative proposals.
