18:25Now PlayingMore than 60 of Germany’s leading companies have unveiled an investment drive worth at least €100 billion ($116 billion) in new projects aimed at lifting Europe’s biggest economy out of stagnation.
As part of the initiative — led by top executives including the heads of Deutsche Bank AG and Siemens AG, and coordinated with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s new government — members have committed a “three-digit billion amount” of new investment in Germany by 2028, according to an emailed statement released Monday.
Together with funds already allocated, the total investment for the period amounts to €631 billion. This includes both planned and new capital investments, research and development expenditures, and commitments from international investors. The move is intended to send “a strong, positive signal” following recent years of capital outflows totaling hundreds of billions of euros.
The corporate vote of confidence comes at a challenging time for Merz, whose lead over the far-right AfD has narrowed in recent polls. The investment push also arrives just before the release of economic output data, which could show a second-quarter contraction, and ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s August 1 tariff deadline — which may impose levies of 30% on European goods shipped to the United States.
“We all strive for the same goal, which is finally to bring back growth and competitiveness in Germany and Europe,” Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg TV, coinciding with the launch of the project, dubbed “Made for Germany.”
Siemens CEO Roland Busch emphasized that the program includes not only large corporations and financial institutions, but also small and mid-sized companies — which he called “hidden champions” — as well as startups.
