The Netherlands will contribute €500 million ($579 million) to Ukraine’s defense as part of a US initiative, making it the first NATO country to donate funds through the new program.
The funds will be given under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, agreed by US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in July. Under this program, NATO allies purchase military equipment from US reserves for Ukraine. The Netherlands is the first NATO ally to finance a full package, the country’s defense ministry said in a statement Monday.
“I commend The Netherlands for taking the lead and turning this initiative into concrete support on the ground,” Rutte said in a separate release. He said he expects “significant announcements” from other allies soon.
The Dutch package includes missiles for Patriot surface-to-air interceptor units, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a post on X. “I am sincerely grateful to the Netherlands for their substantial contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s air shield,” he said.
The Dutch government said last month that it planned to make a “substantial contribution” to beefing up Ukraine’s air defenses. European countries are ramping up their support in the face of Russian attacks and pressure from the US to increase defense spending. NATO members pledged in June to raise core defense spending to at least 3.5% of GDP by 2035.
