5:49Now PlayingUS President Donald Trump reached out to Russian leader Vladimir Putin after hours of talks with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, as the White House pushes to organize a trilateral summit that can bring an end to Russia’s war.
The US president’s outreach to Putin was described by a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity because it had not yet been publicly announced. The call came during a break in talks, with Trump and European leaders resuming discussions at the White House on Monday evening.
Earlier in the afternoon, Zelenskiy signaled he was pleased with the tenor of talks with Trump, saying the US had agreed to two key asks: participating in security guarantees as part of any peace deal, and that discussion of territorial exchanges be reserved for direct talks with Putin. Trump also said that he may be able to convince Russia to release as many as a thousand prisoners as a show of good faith. Bloomberg Economics Chief Geoeconomics Analyst Jennifer Welch joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss.
