Massachusetts has been at the center of the Trump administration’s latest unprecedented attacks on the nascent offshore wind industry, which are imperiling multi-billion dollar projects and related jobs. The moves have come at a time when demand for electricity is expected to surge and many Americans are already facing higher utility bills.
On Wednesday, the Massachusetts wind industry was served a fresh hit when a court filing showed that the US is working to withdraw a permit for the New England Wind 1 and 2 offshore wind projects near Nantucket. That came just days after the administration moved to review a permit for a separate wind farm off the state’s coast. Since taking office, Trump has issued a flurry of orders designed to stymie the fledgling US offshore wind business that threaten billions of dollars of investments, hundreds of jobs and new energy supplies.
The federal government needs to “work with states, not against states in an effort to bring more power on board,” Healey said in an interview with Bloomberg News in Boston on Wednesday. She cited impacts on local jobs and the region’s electricity supplies, which are needed to power data centers.
It “doesn’t make any sense” to curb power supplies, Healey said, adding that it risks driving up power bills. “Everyone in America is dealing with the high cost of energy.”
One project that has seen some reprieve is in New York, where work on a Long Island offshore wind farm was allowed to resume. New York Governor Kathy Hochul brokered a deal with the Trump administration on allowances for that project after signaling she wouldn’t block other energy projects in the state, opening up a path for new natural gas pipelines.
In the interview, Healey said she’d consider any proposals for new gas pipelines sent her way.
Healey joins other Democratic governors pushing back against Trump’s moves. Earlier this week, Healey, along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a statement asking the Trump administration “to uphold all offshore wind permits already granted and allow these projects to be constructed.”
