1:59Now PlayingSpaceX’s Starship deployed test satellites in space and returned to Earth largely intact, repeating earlier milestones critical to Elon Musk’s goal of readying the vehicle for regular launches to orbit and beyond.
The rocket, billed as the largest and most powerful ever built, thundered off the launchpad at SpaceX’s Starbase launch facility in south Texas at 6:24 p.m. local time on Monday.
A few minutes into Monday’s flight, its Super Heavy booster separated from the Starship spacecraft and fired its engines to position itself for landing. It then splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico — like it did during the last flight.
Starship then plunged through Earth’s atmosphere, reaching speeds of 26,800 kilometers (16,653 miles) per hour before landing upright in the Indian Ocean. It promptly erupted in a huge fireball.
