6:22Now PlayingBloomberg's Mishal Husain breaks down her interview with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who told her that she supports US military escalation in her country and says Maduro's time is over.
María Corina Machado, the latest Nobel Peace Prize recipient, said the Venezuelan opposition has exhausted all of its efforts over the last 26 years. In her view, the country’s authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, won’t listen to reason and must receive a blunter message — even if that means the threat of US military intervention.
“The increase in pressure and the escalation that’s taken place is the only way to force Maduro to understand that it’s time to go” and “facilitate a peaceful and orderly transition,” she said on Bloomberg’s The Mishal Husain Show. “This process is about saving lives, millions of lives.”
Machado burst onto the political scene in 2011, taking a strong stand against then-President Hugo Chávez and the nationalizations and expropriations of private businesses carried out by his government. Last year, she helmed the biggest threat to the ruling party yet by mobilizing a fervent citizens’ movement set on ending Chavismo, Venezuela’s brand of socialism, and reuniting families in what’s been the biggest diaspora in the modern Western Hemisphere.
