The last ever penny was stamped at the Philadelphia Mint Wednesday as the Trump administration took the coin out of production, although it will remain in circulation. Blooomberg's Steven Dennis and Dan Flatley break down why the coin was nixed and what logistical problems the move presents.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach presided over the stamping of the final set of coins at the Philadelphia Mint Wednesday after President Donald Trump ordered the coin discontinued earlier this year.

“Although today we say goodbye to the continued production of our copper one cent coin,” Beach said in prepared remarks at the Mint. “Let me be crystal clear, the penny remains legal tender. We have over 300 billion pennies that remain in circulation, and we encourage you to use them.”

“We’re not getting rid of the penny,” he said. “We’re discontinuing the production of it, but we’re not eliminating it as legal tender, so you can still use it at your stores and retail outlets.”
