Cleveland Guardians all-star pitcher Emmanuel Clase pleaded not guilty to charges he participated in an alleged scheme to rig bets based on pitches he threw during Major League Baseball games.
Michael Ferrara, a lawyer for Clase, entered the plea on his behalf at a federal court hearing on Thursday in Brooklyn, New York. US Magistrate Judge Joseph Marutollo released Clase on $600,000 bond and restricted his travel to New York and Ohio.
Federal prosecutors charged Clase, 27, and teammate Luis Ortiz, 26, last week of conspiring with bettors to throw specific types and speeds of pitches in exchange for bribes. On some occasions, Clase allegedly bet on his own pitches.
