9:33Now PlayingFinnish President Alexander Stubb said that together with Italian leader Giorgia Meloni he has spoken to US President Donald Trump about the US 28-point peace plan for Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Stubb, known to have a good relationship with Trump, declined to give details of what was discussed on the call. Speaking in an interview at the Group of 20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg with Bloomberg TV, he said peace negotiations “need patience” and said European nations weren’t aware of Trump’s proposal before it was made.
“The key right now would be to get a ceasefire,” Stubb said, adding that negotiations between 11 concerned nations, including Canada and Japan, and the US over the plan are now taking place. It’s in the strategic interest of the US to support Ukraine, he said.
Trump’s unveiling of the plan alarmed both Ukraine and its European allies as, in its current form, it hands Russia swathes of Ukrainian territory and would limit the effectiveness of Ukraine’s armed forces.
Stubb has previously explained the roles he and Italy’s prime minister play when Europeans discuss Ukraine with Trump, saying while larger nations lead the talks, Meloni jumps in if the discussion “takes a bad turn.” Stubb’s role is to wrap up the key points in order to leave an impression with Trump.
“This call was quite spontaneous,” he said of Sunday’s discussion. “I am sure we will stay in touch.”
European leaders and other allies over the weekend told the US that its 28-point peace plan for Ukraine needed “additional work” after they were taken by surprise by the document.
On Monday European Union leaders will discuss the plan in Angola where they will be gathered for a summit between the EU and the African Union. On Tuesday, talks may take place in the Coalition of the Willing formation, Stubb said.
Ultimately, “President Trump is the person who decides on what the parameters of the document will be,” Stubb said. “At the end of the day, nothing will pass without the green light coming from President Trump.”
