YouTube Description
as posted by the channelNew York Representative Nicole Malliotakis, the only Republican to represent the city in Washington, says that the goal of recent efforts to change the boundaries of her district is to ensure Democrat wins. Malliotakis also weighed in on the city's preparation for winter weather, saying the storm is a test for Mayor Zohran Mamdani and he'll get the heat if roads are cleared properly.
A judge ruled that a New York congressional district must be redrawn, giving Democrats an opportunity to pick up another seat in Congress ahead of November’s hotly-contested midterm elections.
New York’s 11th Congressional District, which is held by Representative Nicole Malliotakis, was found to be in violation of the New York constitution because it diluted Black and Latino voters, according to a ruling issued Wednesday. The seat covers all of Staten Island as well as parts of Brooklyn and is the only one in New York City held by a Republican.
The ruling marks a win for Democrats, giving them an opportunity to pick up another seat in the US House of Representatives, which Republicans hold by a slender majority. Congressional control has been thrust into the national debate this year after President Donald Trump pushed officials in Texas to redraw the state’s maps in favor of Republicans, spurring a rapid move to change district boundaries in both red and blue states, known as redistricting.
In his ruling, Judge Jeffrey H. Pearlman instructed the state’s Independent Restricting Commission to draw up a new version of the district by Feb. 6.
“This is a frivolous attempt by Washington Democrats to steal this congressional seat from the people,” Malliotakis said in an emailed statement after the judge’s decision. She noted that her team is reviewing the ruling and their options moving forward.
