President Donald Trump is heading back to America’s heartland in an attempt to refocus an economic message that’s been upstaged by controversy over his deportation policies and the killing of two protesters by federal officers.
In a visit to Iowa on Tuesday, the president will tour a local business, meet state lawmakers and deliver a speech “on affordability and on the economy,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday. Another White House official said the speech would give the president a chance to trumpet cooling inflation, accelerating growth and rising wages.
But the nation’s focus will be to Iowa’s north, in neighboring Minnesota, where already-high tensions worsened over the weekend when federal immigration agents shot and killed a 37-year-old intensive care nurse after engaging with protesters in Minneapolis.
Trump dispatched border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to assess the situation on the ground and report back to him. Greg Bovino, the US Border Patrol commander who became the face of the sweeping immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, is leaving the city.
The heated dispute over immigration enforcement was the latest in a series of events that have undercut the administration’s attempt to show that it is putting a priority on worries about housing costs and inflation that risk leading the GOP to defeat in the November midterm elections.
On Tuesday, the latest key economic report showed that consumer confidence declined in January to the lowest level in more than a decade on more pessimistic views of the economy and labor market.
