5:40Now PlayingJessica Taylor, Senate and Governors editor at the Cook Political Report, previews the Democrat and Republican primary races for Senate in Texas and breaks down what potential candidate matchups could mean in November as Democrats attempt to flip a long-held GOP seat.
The biggest contest of the 2026 midterm election cycle so far is underway, with voters in Texas making their choices in a statewide primary Tuesday that could determine whether Democrats have a shot at narrowing the gap with Republicans in the US Senate come November.
On the Republican side, a three-way race featuring Senator John Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and US Representative Wesley Hunt is likely to head to a runoff election in May. Cornyn, who is seeking a fifth term in the Senate, holds a massive fundraising advantage but has struggled to erase Paxton’s lead in most polls. Hunt is expected to finish third.
In the Democratic race, US Representative Jasmine Crockett and state Representative James Talarico are offering opposing views on how to win in a Republican-dominated state.
The twin primaries have fueled lavish spending and generated national headlines as the GOP prepares to defend its slim majority in the Senate in November. While the Democrats have never been able to mount a serious challenge to Cornyn, they’re betting that Paxton’s image as a conservative firebrand would potentially offer an opening for Crockett or Talarico to flip the seat blue.
