7:49Now PlayingIsraeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter said the strikes taking out Iran's top leaders have given the opposition an opening to coalesce and provide a force on the ground to topple the regime. Leiter said that the Iranian public opposing the government will serve as boots on the ground to oust the current regime and move into a 'mode of stabilization.'
Iran‘s top clerics are nearing a decision on the country’s next supreme leader after Ali Khamenei was killed in the US-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, with the wartime council laying bare divisions among political factions over the succession and the signal it would send to Tehran’s adversaries.
The Assembly of Experts, the body mandated to choose Khamenei’s successor, has narrowed its list of candidates and will announce a decision “as soon as possible,” members told Iranian state media over the past two days.
But convening the 88-member body of Shiite clerics is no easy task even in peacetime, particularly since many of its members are in their 80s and 90s. Doing so during a war adds another layer of difficulty. Israel carried out a deadly airstrike on the assembly’s main site on Tuesday, killing at least three administrative employees. In 1989 — the only previous time Iran selected a supreme leader — a successor was named a day after Ruhollah Khomeini, the Islamic Republic’s founder, died. Six days after Khamenei’s assassination, the decision remains in flux.
One factor complicating the process is the role of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the military force which controls as much as 40% of the economy and is widely seen as wielding significant influence over the succession.
