5:41Now PlayingAs fans of FX’s new limited series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette search for real-life versions of the characters' wardrobes, they're running into roadblocks. Some consumers are walking into Calvin Klein, where the late Bessette worked, and coming up empty-handed. According to Google Trends, searches for “Calvin Klein 90s” shot up 850% in the US the week Love Story premiered. When customers found more fleece joggers and graphic tees on its website than the sleek basics they were looking for, some turned to secondhand sellers. The RealReal, a luxury resale platform, says it saw searches for Calvin Klein spike 139% in the 12 days following the broadcast of the first episode. PVH Corp., the apparel conglomerate that bought the Calvin Klein brand from the designer of the same name in 2003, declined to comment on its CBK strategy—or lack thereof—citing a quiet period ahead of its next earnings release. And, to be fair, many of the pieces it’s selling today still hail from the recent past, a popular period for modern shoppers: Calvin Klein’s current casual collection features tees and sweatshirts with images of Kate Moss from an early ’90s ad campaign, and the fall 2026 lineup is meant to evoke its late ’70s and early ’80s style. But some shoppers say the vintage looks it’s pushing aren’t quite right. Consumer experts can’t help but wonder if PVH has missed an opportunity by not anticipating the flood of CBK acolytes the program would send its way, much as retailers and toymakers were blindsided last summer that surprise hit KPop Demon Hunters sent fans scrounging for merch that didn’t exist. Dina Katgara, Bloomberg News Consumer Reporter, joins Bloomberg Businessweek Daily to discuss. She speaks with Carol Massar and Tim Stenovec.
