Downing said that politics has taken the place of policy in negotiations and urged lawmakers to fully fund the agency.
resident Donald Trump’s move to pay airport security agents directly eased the sharpest pain point for lawmakers fighting over immigration enforcement, effectively killing momentum in Congress toward a funding deal.
House Republicans on Friday rejected bipartisan Senate legislation to end a partial government and fund most of the Department of Homeland Security.
Instead, they plan to vote on a spending package that funds the department — including immigration enforcement and Border Patrol — until May 22, setting up a new clash with Senate Democrats who have said such a measure is “dead on arrival” without new policies to rein in Trump’s immigration crackdown.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said they plan to vote as soon as possible, signaling it could come as soon as this weekend.
“This gambit that was done last night is a joke,” Johnson told reporters at the Capitol. He said Trump supports the House move, although the president has not announced a position.
Regardless of what Congress does, the practical effects on air travel will be limited. Trump Friday signed a memo ordering Transportation Security Administration agents be paid, a move that will likely cut crippling wait times in the near term.
