The 5.8 magnitude quake hit at 7:53 a.m. and was centered near Levin, a town about 100 kilometers (65 miles) north of Wellington, seismic monitoring agency GeoNet said. Ardern interrupted Newshub host Ryan Bridge to tell him what was happening at the parliament complex in the capital, Wellington, where she was speaking from when the earhquake hit.
