US stock futures staged a small rebound after the tech-fueled selloff, as Chinese AI startup DeepSeek released an AI model called R1 that has gained significant attention and is being compared to leading models from OpenAI and Microsoft. Nvidia has called DeepSeek's new model "excellent" while Sam Altman has welcomed the competition, and promised more from OpenAI. Meanwhile the US dollar advanced after US President Donald Trump threatened to slap tariffs on foreign-produced semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and some metals to compel producers to manufacture in the country.
